Meet the Lodi Apple: Apple Holler’s Tart Taste of Summer
If you’re a fan of crisp, tart apples, then you’re in for a treat! Every summer, one of the first apples to ripen in our orchards is the Lodi apple (pronounced LOH-dye). While it may not be as well-known as some of the fall favorites, the Lodi has earned a loyal following for its bright flavor and incredible versatility.
In fact, at Apple Holler, the Lodi holds a special title. It’s our only sour green apple and a fantastic substitute for the popular Granny Smith!
A Little History
The Lodi apple has been delighting apple lovers for over a century. Introduced in 1924 by the New York Agricultural Experiment Station, it was developed by crossing two beloved varieties: Yellow Transparent and Montgomery. The result was an early-season apple that ripens well before many traditional fall varieties, giving apple enthusiasts a chance to enjoy fresh-picked apples in the heart of summer.
Named after the town of Lodi, New York, this apple has become a favorite among home bakers and orchard visitors looking for that unmistakable tart apple flavor.
What Does a Lodi Apple Taste Like?
Lodi apples are known for their:
- Bright, tart flavor
- Crisp, juicy texture when freshly picked
- Refreshing acidity
- Tender flesh that softens beautifully when cooked
Unlike sweeter summer apples, the Lodi offers a refreshing sour bite that makes it stand out. That’s exactly why so many of our guests love them.
Lodi apples are our only sour green apple, making them an excellent alternative to Granny Smith apples while they’re in season. If your favorite recipe calls for Granny Smith, chances are a freshly picked Lodi will do the job beautifully, and with even fresher flavor.
The Best Ways to Enjoy Lodi Apples
Because of their naturally tart flavor, Lodi apples truly shine in the kitchen.
They’re perfect for:
- Homemade apple pies
- Applesauce
- Apple butter
- Crisps and cobblers
- Baking into muffins and breads
- Cooking down into jams and preserves
While many people enjoy eating them fresh, their bright acidity really comes alive in baked recipes where a little sugar balances their tangy flavor.
